Marlene Dietrich – an affectionate tribute

Published at 13:02 on 15/10/2011

Coming up on Fri of 2nd Week is a presentation by Terry Sanderson on the extraordinary life of Marlene Dietrich.

From her start in Weimar Berlin to her fabulous Hollywood career (we’ll see some of her most memorable movie scenes) and on to her heroic wartime fight against the Nazis, finishing with a showing – in its entirety – of her one-woman show. “She was probably the original atheist in a foxhole,” says Sanderson, referring to comments she made in her autobiography at her revulsion at seeing preachers from both sides invoking the same God to defeat their enemy.

Published at 11:54 on 04/03/2011

Jonathan Herapath is Wadham College Chaplain and a member of the Sea of Faith Network, which exists to promote 'religion as a human creation'. He will speak on 'The Human Condition and the Perseverance of Religion'. Have we been left with a creator-shaped blank - and must we invent a creator to fill it?

The event will be at 8pm in the Old Refectory, Wadham College. After the event there will be an Extraordinary General Meeting for members to elect the society's Committee for 2011/12, which all are welcome to attend (or not).

The event is free to members and £2 for non-members. Membership is £5 for a year and £10 for life, and you can join at the event. A member of the committee will be at the Lodge shortly before the event.
